Friendships With People and Plants

Reflecting about why I have stayed in Spalding Garden Club for over 40 years has brought me to the conclusion "It's all about the People and the Plants." I first joined SGC to meet my neighbors. The club meetings were held in our homes. Our members shared their common love of gardening and we would have monthly programs related to floral design, conservation, native plants, and proper ways to plant trees, flowers, and plants to enhance our landscapes. We concentrated on having fun and getting to know each other.

While meeting new people, we were introduced to ground covers like pachysandra, ajuga, and creeping jenny. We learned about shade plants like hosts, ferns, and azaleas, and sun loving plants s such as Homestead verbena, lantana, lamp ear, and dusty miller, and herbs like parsley, thyme, and rosemary. New plants became our friends if we could count on them to grow, bloom and thrive in our hot summers. We created natural habitats for birds and butterflies in our yards. We met so many plants, trees and flowers. I had a new garden club.

Spalding Garden Club has grown in membership and technology since 1975. With 49 active members, we are too large to meet in our homes. As President these next two years, I'd like us to focus on the joys of gardening for friendship. Let's continue the beautification of our properties, our neighborhoods, the butterfly garden, and complete our newest project, planting a xeriscape garden in front of the Dunwoody Post Office. Let's enjoy old friends, and make new ones this next two years in Spalding Garden Club. With programs and speakers each month, we will broaden our knowledge of landscapes and plant material, and add to our list of favorite people and plants.
